Windsurfing: Stevenson, Columbia River Gorge Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: 23 decreasing Surf / Sea State: small swell Air Temperature: 36 Sea Temperature: 20 Weather: 'OT! Max Speed: Distance Covered:
The heatwave continues. According to iWindsurf.com, Stevenson was the place
to go for a bit of wind. It's 15m West of Hood River on the Washington
side.
On the way I looked in at the famous 'Hatchery' - it was packed to
capacity, no shade, and in my guide it said 'advanced only', so I pressed
on.
'Bob's Beach' at Stevenson was FANTASTIC. A small, SHADED, green grass
rigging area, free parking, loos, even a changing room. I happened to
arrive with everyone else, and being a small place made it even more
friendly.
It was blowing pretty well, so took out the wave board with a 5.0. Had a
great 40 mins or so, those carve gybes getting so close... Also 'buddied'
a local sailor, Judy, on the water, which added to the good feeling.
The wind dropped a bit, so I swapped boards for the Carve (I only have my
4.5, 5.0, and 6.8 with me here, along with the Mystery & Carve).
That combination (5.0 & Carve) worked well, although I was still
experimenting with those straps. The Carve planes so much quicker & easier
than my old 310 'barge', and really holds on a long time through the lulls.
Soon it was time to change up again to a 6.8, again to the envy of most the
small-sail locals. Breezed along for another 45 mins or so burning up
everything in sight before the wind dropped off some more...
Another wonderful, and varied, session with some lovely people in a
stunning setting.
